Smart Gilas 5 bound for Australia, Las Vegas

It will be a busy two months for the Smart Gilas Pilipinas National Team as they fly to Australia, Serbia and Las Vegas for training.

The Nationals will leave on March 12 for Sydney, Canberra and Perth in Australia and will proceed to Serbia afterwards.

On April 22 to 30, they will be in Nevada where they are expected to be joined by 6-foot-3 Filipino-American Chris Lutz.

Lutz is currently seeing action for the Marshall University in the US NCAA Division I.

Lutz will take one of the last two slots at Gilas, which is hoping to land an Olympic berth in the 2011 FIBA Asia Championship.

Gilas coach Rajko Toroman arrived Tuesday from the United States. He has narrowed his choices between seven-footer Michael Fey, who suited up for US NCAA Division I school UCLA, and 6-11 NBA journeyman Dwayne Jones as potential import for Gilas.

The coaching staff has yet to arrive at a decision at press time

Now on his senior year, Lutz has been tallying 8.6 points and 1.9 rebounds per outing in 27 games. He also averaged almost 26 minutes on the floor.

Apart from these numbers, Toroman is impressed with Lutz’s three-point shooting and solid defense.

Gilas team manager Frankie Lim added that Gilas would become more potent in the backcourt once Lutz joins forces with Chris Tiu, Mark Barroca, JVee Casio, Dylan Ababou and the defense-oriented Marcio Lassiter, another Filipino-foreign find.
