Multi-titled PBA coach Tim Cone did not expect Purefoods to be in the championship round of the ongoing KFC-PBA Philippine Cup.
In so many words, the Alaska mentor admitted during the pre-finals press conference held at the posh Gateway Suites of the Gateway Mall in Cubao, Quezon City that he had been preparing for a championship encounter with San Miguel Beer, as he waited for the semifinal round to end.
“I only started preparing for Purefoods when the semis went 3-2 in favor of Purefoods, and a different finals scenario loomed,” said Tim.
Tim describes his finals opponent as “long, tall and quick, a team that goes to the boards very well, a team that comes and covers for each other.”
He said he’s still figuring out how to play the Giants.

Actually, Purefoods coach Ryan Gregorio said the same thing, although at this point, both tacticians must already have their basic game plans.
In this series, the experts—except for Tim— agree that Purefoods is the underdog.
“If they (Purefoods) figured out San Miguel Beer, they could figure us out,” Tim said.

Two years ago, the Boston Celtics beat the heavily favored Los Angeles Lakers to end a long title drought.
The Lakers, under coach Phil Jackson, run the triangle offense, which Cone adopted for the Aces.
But no, Ryan said he was not going to take his cue from the Celtics because he believes Tim is a smarter coach than Jackson.
Anyway, both coaches agreed it was a game of adjustments with neither team having a big advantage over the other.
