Talk ‘N Text coach Chot Reyes slammed his former team San Miguel Beer for filing a protest seeking to forfeit the Tropang Texters’ win, saying the move is meant to benefit the Beermen’s sister teams in the race for the next round of the PBA Philippine Cup.
TNT beat SMB in a road game in Zamboanga last Saturday, 93-91, but the Beermen placed it under protest, claiming there was a delay on the match and that the Texters brought a wrong set of uniform.
The PBA’s technical committee met on Tuesday to discuss the protest and according to Media Bureau Chief Willie Marcial, Commissioner Sonny Barrios is expected to make a decision on Wednesday.
For Reyes, San Miguel’s main motive in seeking to forfeit TNT’s win is to give Barangay Ginebra and Purefoods a trouble-free ride either to an automatic semis seat or the quarterfinals.
“It’s clear that they’re not doing it for themselves but their sister teams," said Reyes.
The Beermen had already secured the first automatic semis seat as early as last week. Their sister teams – Barangay Ginebra and Purefoods – are still very much in the running both for the last automatic semis seat and the quarterfinals.
Finishing their elims campaign with a 13-5 record, the Beermen will take a long break as other teams have to play in the remaining schedule of the elimination round and the league’s next phase – the wildcard.
After that, the Beermen will still await the survivors of the wildcard and the quarterfinals series.
Ginebra, which finished with a 12-6 card, and Purefoods, which has 11 wins and two more games left in its schedule, are still on the thick of the fight to possibly join the Beermen in the Final Four outright.
Talk ‘N Text finished with an 11-7 record and is battling for a seat to the quarterfinals.
The Giants will play Sta. Lucia Realty (10-6) on Friday at the Ynares Center in Antipolo City.
A win by the Realtors will create a three-way tie among Purefoods, Talk ‘N Text and the Realtors, but the Tropang Texters will advance to the quarterfinals due to a superior quotient over the two teams.
Reyes considered the Beermen’s reasons for trying to strip away their win as a “lame excuse," especially after the Tropang Texters clearly won in front of thousands of Zamboangueños.
