Chris Tiu uses star-status to save lives

Anyone who’s turned on a television over the past couple of years should know who Chris Tiu is.

After achieving great success as the talismanic leader of the Ateneo Blue Eagles collegiate basketball team, the mercurial 24-year-old has gone onto a larger stage in professional basketball, playing for the Smart Gilas team. He also is a celebrated TV host, with two popular shows – “Pinoy Records” and “Ripley’s Believe It or Not!” – on GMA-7, as well as a popular image model and a sitting barangay kagawad. Rounding out his list of accomplishments are degrees in Management Engineering and Mathematical Finance. Clearly, Chris is all about worthy ventures.

Chris’ latest may be his most important one. The basketball superstar and all-around nice guy is now looking to parlay some of his fame and renown in teaching others about the dangers of HPV infection and the importance of prevention. He is at the helm of a new campaign against the disease called Help Fight HPV, with a TV commercial in the works that’s set to premier sometime before the end of the month.

He recently joined us at the Good Times booth to talk about his new found advocacy.

“HPV, which is short for human papilomavirus, is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections in the world today,” said Chris. “But while we all know that HPV can lead to cervical cancer, no one really talks about how men are threatened by the virus as well.”

Chris makes a good point. Women have known about the risks posed by HPV infection for years. In the country, about 12 Filipino women die each day of cervical cancer, a disease linked with HPV. The virus is also seen as a cause of vaginal and vulvar cancers.

But while doctors estimate that up to 50 percent of sexually active people will catch HPV in their lifetime, few seem to know about just how commonplace the infection is, with a great number of cases going undiagnosed.

Even more are unaware of the equally serious threat that HPV poses to men. Certain HPV types cause highly contagious genital warts – a disease that affects both men and women – and that is passed on to about 32 million people around the world each year.

“Abstinence really is the surest way of preventing HPV. The good news though is that, today, both men and women can prevent HPV infection through vaccination,” added Chris. “So I urge everyone to go ask their doctor about getting vaccinated.”

Smart Gilas Pilipinas routs South Wales in Aussie tour

MANILA, Philippines - Smart Gilas Pilipinas walloped South Wales Institute of Sports, 82-63, for its fourth win in as many games in its Australian tour.

The RP training team earlier downed the Canberra Gunners, 101-84, topped Australia team B, 79-73, edged Australia Under-19 squad, 78-76, then fought Australia team B to a 73-all standoff.

Smart Gilas will conclude its Australian training tour with a game versus the Sydney team tonight.

“Every game is a learning process for the team and we hope to keep on learning and getting tough,” said Smart Gilas team manager Frankie Lim.

After their Australian tour, the Gilas team flies to Serbia for a series of exhibition games against tall European squads.

Smart Gilas, mentored by Serbian Rajko Toroman, is in deep preparation for the 2011 FIBA Asia Championship where it hopes to snare a berth in the 2012 London Olympics.

Smart Gilas slams Canberra Gunners

MANILA, Philippines - Smart Gilas Pilipinas continued its impressive showing Down Under as it blasted the Canberra Gunners, 101-84, to remain undefeated in its six-game Australian Tour at the Belconnen Basketball Stadium Thursday night.

Dylan Ababou, the reigning UAAP MVP, exploded for 20 points he spiked with five triples while Mac Baracael and skipper Chris Tiu chipped in 15 and 14 points, respectively, to anchor the lopsided win for the Filipinos.

It was the third win by the Nationals, who downed Australia’s Under-19 team, 78-67, and Australia’s second team, 79-73.

Their other game ended up in a 73-all draw.

The Smart Gilas team was playing NSWIS last night and is scheduled to face a club from Sydney City tomorrow.

“We’re doing great,” said Smart Gilas team manager Frankie Lim. “But more than the wins, we hope to toughen up and learn many things from training games like this.”

The win over the Gunners, one of the top teams in the Southeast Australia cage league, came as a big surprise since the host team did not only have size advantage but was also backed by foreign-bred players like Glenn Baird, who played college ball in the US NCAA, and Zlatko Todorovski, a Macedonian-born player.

Fil-Am Greg Slaughter continued to dish out solid games as he finished with nine points, five rebounds and two shot blocks after scoring a combined 29 points in the last two games.

Jason Ballesteros also returned after sitting it out in the team’s previous game as he turned in nine points, 11 rebounds, one shot block, a steal and an assist.

After struggling for just a pair of triples the last time out, the Filipinos torched the rim with 13 treys with Ababou leading the attack.

Smart Gilas stays unbeaten

Smart Gilas-RP national team salvaged a 73-all standoff with Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) Tuesday night to remain unbeaten in three exhibition games in Canberra, Australia.

Chris Tiu led the Nationals with 20 points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals in 29 minutes of action while University of the Visayas big man Greg Slaughter registered 13 points, seven rebounds and three blocks.

The Nationals had the chance to defeat AIS anew when Japeth Aguilar and Mark Barroca joined force to give Smart Gilas-RP a 73-70 lead with 27 ticks left.

But Anthony Drmic answered back with a booming trey 12 seconds later to tie the game. The Nationals had another opportunity to turn the game around but Smart Gilas' Marcio Lassiter turned the ball over with three ticks left.

Drmic sizzled with 18 points on an impressive 4-of-7 shooting from the 3-point area while Cameron Bairstow added 13 points and nine rebounds.

In their first game, they scored 78-67 victory over the Australia U-19 national team Monday night before beating AIS, 79-73, in what was described by Tiu as a physical matchup.

In that contest, Slaughter made 16 points and five rebounds while Barroca added 13 points.

As of presstime, Smart Gilas is playing the Canberra Gunners of the Southeastern Australia Basketball League. It will also play the NSW Sports Institute this Friday before completing its assignment against Sydney City on Saturday.

Smart Gilas defeats Canberra Gunners, 101-84

The Smart Gilas Philippine National team continued its tour of Australia with an impressive 101-84 win over the Canberra Gunners one of the top teams in the South East Australia Basketball League at the Belconnen Basketball Stadium on Thursday.

A dazzling first quarter where the nationals opened up a 29-14 lead and a tremendous final quarter where Smart Gilas outscored the Australians 32-21 nailed down the team’s third win in four games with Wednesday’s rematch with the Australian Institute of Sports ending in a 73-73 standoff in regulation and both coaches deciding not to play an extra five minutes since it was effectively a no-bearing practice game.

Dylan Ababou seeing extended minutes for the first time led all scorers with 20 points in just over 19 minutes of action while Mac Baracael finished with 15 points, sweet shooting team captain Chris Tiu adding 14 points aside from pulling down 4 rebounds and handing off 2 assists in nearly 27 minutes on the court.

Lanky Japeth Aguilar played just under eleven and a half minutes but contributed 10 points with 1 rebounds and 1 shot block while Greg Slaughter continued his consistent run with 9 points to go with 5 rebounds and 2 blocks in only 7 minutes 42 seconds of action.

Jason Ballesteros scored 9 points and was the leading rebounder with 11 boards aside from 1 shot block and 1 assist. Marcio Lassiter also played a key role with 8 points, 2 rebounds, 3 steals and 1 shot block while RJ Razul added 6 points.

The Canberra Gunners were led by star center/forward Glenn Baird who played in the US NCAA and can shoot the three, with 14 points and 7 rebounds while Jonathan Miller checked in with 13 points and 3 rebounds, point guard Shane Brown 12 points and 3 rebounds and Jamie Mesman 11 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assists.

One of the keys to the rousing win for coach Rajko Toroman and his Smart Gilas youngsters was their ability to keep Macedonian-born guard Zlatko Todorovski in check. The Filipinos went to the dugout at halftime with a 15 point cushion 49-34 which the Canberra Gunners with a solid third cut to 6 at 69-63.

But spitfire point guard Mark Barroca buried a three less than 30 seconds into the final quarter and then pulled off a steal and when Ballesteros scored the Smart Gilas lead was quickly up to 11 74-63. After Shane Brown scored Ababou replied almost immediately and with a three point play made it 77-65 time down to 8:12.

An Ababou triple made it 83-69 before Lassiter and Slaughter split their charities to push Smart Gilas in front by 16, 88-72. Todorovski scored back-to-back baskets including a three-point shot for a 91-78 count with 2:48 remaining A basket by Baracael, a triple by Jazul and another triple by Lassiter sandwiched baskets by Aaron Coddington and Jonathan Miller but when Todorovski was forced into a turnover on an errant pass and Ballesteros scored Smart Gilas enjoyed their biggest lead of the ballgame, 19 points with 48 seconds left to play before Daniel Jackson scored the final basket for the Gunners to make it 101-84.

For the first time in their Australian stint the Filipinos were able to hold their own off the boards with both sides pulling down 31 rebounds. However, Smart Gilas out-hustled the Gunners with 5 steals to 1, had 5 shot blocks against 2, committed less turnovers 6 to 9 , shot better from beyond the arc with 13- of- 28 for 46 percent compared to 6-of-15 by the Gunners for a 40 percent clip and converting 26-of-32 free throws for a high 81 percent while the Canberra squad made 22-of-33 for 67 percent.

Smart Gilas posts 2nd win Down Under

MANILA, Philippines - Smart Gilas edged Australia’s second national team, 79-73, behind a tenacious inside game Tuesday night in the Nationals’ second outing in a series of tune-up games in Australia.

Greg Slaughter, 22, towered over a tall Aussie side, putting in a team-high 16 points on an impressive seven-of-nine performance.

The University of Visayas standout also had five rebounds, four shot blocks and a steal to help power the Nationals to their second straight victory following their 78-67 win over Australia’s Under-19 squad last Monday.

Co-skipper Mark Barroca scored 13 points and finished with three rebounds and the same number of assists while team caption Chris Tiu had 12 points and pulled down seven rebounds and had two assists.

“We’re doing great, we’re on the right track,” said Smart Gilas team manager Frankie Lim.

Smart Gilas’ Serbian coach Rajko Toroman said the team needs to sustain its form as the RP cagers take on the same team tonight (Philippine time).

Smart Gilas 5 trims tall, young Australians

MANILA, Philippines - Smart Gilas Pilipinas shackled a young Australian side in the fourth quarter and pulled off a 78-67 victory in an exhibition game in Canberra, Australia Monday.

JR Cawaling fired 19 points, including three triples, while Mark Barroca and Japeth Aguilar each had 12 points to power the Filipinos to the victory over their Under-19 counterparts.

The Nationals trailed majority of the match but struck back behind a solid defensive game and the clutch shooting by Cawaling in the final quarter.

“Most of them are still in high school and still growing. They’re already being groomed and quartered as early as now,” said Smart Gilas skipper Chris Tiu on his twitter account.

“Just finished an exhibition game against the U-19 national team of Australia, we won by 12 points. They’re very tall, fast, physical and athletic,” he said.

Smart Gilas, still in search of a naturalized player, finished with 16 assists against the Aussies’ 13, had more steals, 9-5, and made less turnovers, 12-22. Despite their size, the Filipinos had more blocks, 9-8.

The Nationals, who trailed by three points at the start of the final period, shot better from the field, making 30 of their 67 shots for 45 percent and draining half of their 18 three-point attempts.

The Australia swing is part of Smart Gilas’ preparation for this year’s Guangzhou Asian Games as well as the 2011 FIBA-Asia Championship.

The scores:

Smart Gilas 78 – Cawaling 19, Barroca 12, Aguilar 12, Tiu 8, Baracael 7, Slaughter 6, Ababou 5, Jazul 5, Ballesteros 4

Smart Gilas Pilipinas takes opener in Australian Tour

Smart Gilas Pilipinas beat the Australian Junior National Team 78-67 in their first game Down Under. Close game from start to finish.

The Aussie team was very physical and they matched the Filipinos’ speed and quickness.

Plus, they had the height! Gilas’ guards got a taste of their own medicine with their Australian guards harassing them no end. The Baby Boomers utilized their size advantage by covering Gilas’ outside shooters.

JR Cawaling, RJ Jazul and Greg Slaughter were the ones that carried the team tonight. Only RJ was connecting from the outside.

JR was on fire in the second half and Greg was able to use his size as he defended
and rebounded well throughout the whole game.

Chris Tiu: "We'll be playing the national team pool tom. Something like their "team B" i believe... Gonna be very tough!"

"we're going to Sydney on Friday to play two games. 1 is closed door but the one on Sunday is open to public i believe. Sunday 3pm at the Alexandria Basketball Stadium, Maddox st. Alexandria. Will inform if there are changes."

Gilas toughens up for Asiad with heavy 80-game slate

After a strong third place finish in a tough tournament in Dubai, the Smart Gilas Pilipinas team will hardly have time to relax as the Pinoy cagers will embark on an array of training and tournaments abroad prior to their Asian Games campaign in Guangzhou, China in November.

According to Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) executive director Noli Eala, the plan is to expose Gilas to as many as 80 games to toughen the Nationals up for the Asiad and in the long run, the Olympic-qualifying Fiba Asia tournament next year.

“We have lined up 80 games for this team this year leading up to the Asian Games. This is by far more than what the PBA teams play and it will help the team get better and better," Eala said.

He said Gilas will undergo training and exposure in Australia, US, Canada and Serbia in between major international competitions like the Fiba Asia Champions Cup, Jones Cup and Fiba Asia Stankovic Cup.

Tuneup games against professional teams in Australia’s National Basketball League will keep Gilas busy this month while a foray in Belgrade will be up in April, and a stint in the US and Canada and participation in the Fiba Asia Champions Cup in Qatar will occupy its time in May.

In June, the squad will return to the Philippines but will still figure in a pocket tournament with Iran, New Zealand and possibly Japan or Korea. The next month will see the Nationals competing in the Jones Cup and Stankovic Cup.

By October, the Gilas cagers will likely go back to the US to play against US NCAA teams before they represent the country in the Guangzhou Asiad on Nov. 12-27.

Such heavy, yearlong schedule is intended to prepare the team for its long-term mission to qualify for the 2012 London Olympics.

And with Gilas’ stellar showing in their recent Middle East sortie, its Serbian coach Rajko Toroman is upbeat about his wards’ ability to deliver the goods.

“The Philippines finished fifth place in the Champions Cup in Jakarta under coach Chot Reyes. This team [Gilas] finished third in Dubai and in the [coming] Asian Games we will be in the Finals. In the 2011 Olympic-qualifying tournament we can be champion. So we are on the right track," said Toroman.

No import for Aussie tour

It’s not likely that the Smart-Gilas national basketball squad will play in Australia with a naturalization candidate. That’s the word from team manager Frankie Lim who said the other day he’s still negotiating to sign up either Dwayne Jones or Brian Butch as Gilas’ “import.”

“I’m still trying to get hold of Jones’ agent,” said Lim. “Butch is our second option. He’s a four-guy who has a good touch from medium range.”

Gilas is set to leave March 12 to play at least five games against Australian selections in Sydney and Canberra. Then, the team will depart for Serbia on March 28 to play seven games.

Jones has played for Boston, Cleveland and Charlotte in the NBA. He teamed with current NBA guards Jameer Nelson and Delonte West to power St. Joseph’s University to a 30-2 record in 2004 and was the first player from Norman Black’s alma mater to register a triple double in nearly 20 years.

Butch, nicknamed the “Polar Bear,” is averaging 17.5 points, 10.6 rebounds and 33 minutes for the Bakersfield Jam in the NBA Developmental League this season. He was the MVP of the recent D-League All-Star Game, compiling 18 points and 13 rebounds in 21 minutes.

SBP executive director Noli Eala said Jones and Butch are coach Rajko Toroman’s personal picks.

As for Fil-Am guard Chris Lutz, Eala mentioned that the Marshall University deadshot will skip the Australia and Serbia tours to play out his varsity eligibility in the NCAA. “He is committed to join Gilas right after the playoffs,” continued Eala. “He will definitely play for Gilas during the coming US and Canada tours.”

Eala also said Bernie Atienza, Butch Antonio, Rico Meneses and Joey Bautista continue to be involved in Gilas’ affairs.

“They weren’t actually completely relieved of their duties with the national team,” explained Eala. “Bernie, as SBP deputy executive director, is chairman of the national team management group. Butch is coach Rajko’s choice as special assistant and handles all national teams so he clearly remains an integral part of Gilas. Rico is chairman of the SBP marketing committee and still secures sponsorships for Gilas including, recently, deals with Unilab as official team sponsor, Omega Pain Killer as official liniment and GMA Pinoy TV as broadcast partner of the Mideast tour. Joey is head of the SBP media group and handles digital information dissemination and documentation for Gilas. They’re all still very much involved with Gilas’ marketing, media and coordination with international federations. The only real change is for these guys to help Gilas outside of Smart’s payroll. It’s part of what I agreed with SBP vice chairman Ricky Vargas as budget management. These Gilas volunteers are responsible for the chemistry, camaraderie and animo of the team. The players will attest to their contributions.”

Alaska’s top gunners Willie Miller and L.A. Tenorio combined for only 9-of-28 from the floor, a 32.1 percent clip, in Game 4 of the recent PBA Philippine Cup finals between Purefoods and the Aces. They were the only Aces in twin digits so you can imagine how poorly the rest shot.

Purefoods’ second unit provided a major lift with the bench contributing 25 points to Alaska’s 16. Rico Maierhofer was particularly productive as he delivered 12 points, six rebounds and two assists in 18 solid minutes. Alaska’s top bench scorer was Jeffrey Cariaso who shot only five points in eight quiet minutes. Throughout the playoffs, Tender Juicy Giants coach Ryan Gregorio showed confidence in his shock troopers who paid him back with interest – among them, Niño Canaleta, P.J. Simon, Paul Artadi, Don Allado and Jondan Salvador.

But in the clutch, Gregorio turned to his starters who were unstoppable – MVP James Yap, Roger Yap, Kerby Raymundo, Marc Pingris and Rafi Reavis. They fueled the surge that carried the Giants to an 86-76 win to clinch the series, 4-0, before over 16,000 fans at the Araneta Coliseum last Wednesday.

In a touching message, Gregorio’s father Martin sent this text to his son: “We’re all very proud of your extraordinary achievement, Noy (his nickname is Nonoy). God has been very kind to us. Always remember that as you take off, high, propelled by rare feats, you should always deeply bury your feet on the ground and remain humble. That’s the essence of greatness. Humility is an indispensable ingredient to immortality. Those who crow at every achievement eventually melt due to the heat of their own adversities. Glad you have constantly manifested this sterling virtue and your answers to interviews especially about Tim’s accomplishments. That makes your mom (Lucille) and me doubly happy. Our love always.”

Alaska fought a good fight and gave its all in trying to extend the best-of-seven duel but the Giants wouldn’t be denied. Gregorio had all the bases covered from matchups to substitution patterns to changing defenses to unpredictable combinations. It’s been eight conferences since Purefoods won a title so Gregorio had a long wait before picking up his third crown. Alaska’s last title came six conferences ago.

Top-seeded Alaska could’ve celebrated too early after sweeping Barangay Ginebra in the semifinals and looked like the Aces lost steam or their killer’s instinct against Purefoods. The Giants, in contrast, had nothing to lose and everything to gain as the No. 3 seed, playing without pressure and generating energy from every conceivable five Gregorio sent to the court.

To play the kind of merciless defense that Purefoods displayed, the Giants had to have depth – fresh legs moving in and out to leave the Aces gasping for breath. Pacing became a vital element in Gregorio’s shuffling and it reaped dividends as in every game of the series, the Giants were tougher, sturdier and stronger in the homestretch.

Still, Alaska has nothing to be ashamed of. It’s a team that knows how to lose with dignity.

M. Lhuillier-Cebu Niños beat Smart Gilas Pilipinas in second exhibition game

The M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu Niños displayed the poise of a veteran to avenge a frustrating defeat last Thursday with pulsating 79-76 victory over the Smart-Gilas Pilipinas National Men’s Team at the Cebu Coliseum friday night.

The win wrapped up a two-game exhibition series and the Niños will again host two matches against the Talk ‘N Tex Phone Pals on March 8 and 9 at the Cebu Coliseum.

Yesterday, the M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala squad stamped its dominance over the youthful Gilas, 2-1 in their head-to-head match-up, though Smart Sports director Patrick Gregorio said Gilas could be back for more matches.

“Definitely we will be back. Gilas will travel to Australia, Serbia and Las Vegas in the coming days. But we will be back,” Gregorio told Sun.Star Cebu.

Despite the defeat, Gilas achieved what they came for--generate support and bring the national team closer to the fans outside of Manila.

“The reason we came here is to bring the team closer to the people in the provinces and you can see how they turned up in this game in terms of support. Tinalikuran nila
yung M. Lhuillier and they rooted for Gilas,” added Gregorio.

The crowd booed the Niños and cheered every Gilas basket and defensive stop.

The Niños were shooting like crazy early as they sank four triples en route to a 22-10 lead after the first quarter.

Gilas was struggling all throughout the first half and allowed the Niños to erect their biggest lead, 46-26, early in the third period.

It was at this situation when the nationals changed gears, holding Cebu to just two points in the next 5:10 to make it within 48-45 with 4:17 to play in the third.

The Niños answered with a short 5-0 blitz but Gilas countered with a 9-0 rally to take the lead for the first time back since 8-7 in the first quarter.

The Niños held their slim lead all throughout the final period, thanks to the all out games of Stephen Padilla, Bruce Dacia and reinforcement Jason Dixon.

Dacia, who scored only four, last Thursday, finished with 19 points, while Padilla had 21 points including five triples.

The Scores:

M.Lhuillier-Cebu (79) - Padilla 21, Dacia 19, Dixon 15, Mepana 8, Santos 4, Saladaga 4, Basco 3, Ababon 2, Enriquez 2

M. Lhuillier hits back at Gilas

CEBU, Philippines - The M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu Niños wasted away a 20-point lead in the third quarter, but toiled hard when it mattered most to scrape through a 79-76 victory and get even with the Smart Gilas Team Pilipinas in their two-day exhibition match before a sizeable crowd last night at the Cebu Coliseum.

After closing the first half with a buzzer-beating triple, streak-shooter Stephen Padilla opened the third period with another 3-point bomb to give the Niños of team owner Michel J. Lhuillier and coach Raul “Yayoy” D. Alcoseba their largest lead at 46-26.

That huge advantage, however, suddenly disappeared as the Nationals of Serbian coach Rajko Toroman suddenly turned red-hot and whipped up a furious 28-7 rally to briefly snatch the driver’s seat, 54-53, their first since getting off to a 6-3 start.

After a 54-all standoff going into the final canto, the two protagonists figured in an intense hardcourt battle that left the large throng of spectators holding their breath until the final buzzer.

Smart Gilas could only tie the score at 65-all at the spirited M. Lhuillier stalwarts bravely guarded at lead five points edge, the last was at 76-71 with 36 seconds left to play.

At that point, the Niños nearly flirted with disaster after import Jason Dixon was whistled for a technical foul for throwing the ball at Barroca.

In that swing though, Gilas could only make two points on Barroca’s free throw as they commited a costly miscue in their possession.

Smart Gilas, showing the courage and fortitude that made them worthy to fight for the flag and country in major international competitions and hopefully in the 2012 London Olympics, threatened for the last time at 76-77 on Casio’s trey with only four second to go.

In the ensuing sequence, Dixon was quickly fouled by Greg Slaughter and the former NCAA star and one-time PBA import calmly deliver the goods to give M. Lhuillier a 79-76 cushion.

Still, Smart Gilas has a chance to square the count, but Casio, who found an open spot from the right wing, misfired his 3-point attempt, with Ariel Mepaña securing the ball as the final buzzer honked, leaving the entire M. Lhuillier bench and their legion of fans to burst into frenzied celebration.

Padilla exploded with 21 points, Bruce Dacia added 19 and Dixon finished with 15 points for the Niños, who will face next PBA’s Talk N’ Txt Phone Pals on March 8 to 9 at the Cebu Coliseum.

Afterwhich, the Niños will take on the Brgy. Ginebra Kings on March 12 at the USC-Main Gym.

The Scores:

M.Lhuillier-Cebu (79) - Padilla 21, Dacia 19, Dixon 15, Mepana 8, Santos 4, Saladaga 4, Basco 3, Ababon 2, Enriquez 2

RP Gilas (76) –Baracael 15, Barroca 13, Lassiter 10, Casio 9, Abubou 9, Ballesteros 7, Aguilar 7, Tui 4

Smart Gilas Pilipinas defeats M. Lhuillier-Cebu Niños in first exhibition game

CEBU, Philippines - RP Smart Gilas bounced back with and 83-71 victory last night to beat M. Lhuillier-Cebu Niños in the first game of their two-part exhibition at the Cebu Coliseum.

The win actually evens things up for both teams as the Cebuanos stopped the national squad in their first meeting last year.

Today’s game set at 5 p.m. will be some sort of a decider.

The RP Smart Gilas came in full force with stars Chris Tiu, Japeth Aguilar and Marcio Lassiter joining the squad for this Cebu stint.

The Niños, however, took command in the early going and were up by as much as 12 points before Gilas broke the ice.

The presence of import Jason Dixon added some muscle to coach Yayoy Alcoseba’s team at the start, but later in the game, this also appeared to have been to their disadvantage.

After a strong start, Dixon failed to deliver the points later in the game and veteran point guard Woodrow Enriquez also lost his cool when he was slapped a foul.

Game officials awarded Gilas two technical freethrows plus ball possession after Enriquez flared up, which helped turn the game around.

Dylan Ababou, Tiu, Mac Baracael and JV Casio stepped up and powered Gilas’ 13-0 run to help their team go up by 12, 61-49.

The Niños tried to get back the lead, but seemed to lack the firepower.

Gilas’ Japhet Aguilar made a back-to-back slam dunks and Cebuano Greg Slaughter also chipped in for the nationals to the delight of the spectators.

There were some calls that went in favor of the Niños, that RP coach Rajko Taroman threatened not to finish the game with six minutes and 28 seconds left.

The proverbial cooler heads prevailed and the game continued.

The scores:

RP GILAS (83 ) – Tiu16, Casio 14, Lassiter 14, Baracael 11, Ababou 10, Aguilar 10, Slaughter 6 Barroca 2

MLKP NIÑOS (71 ) – Dixon 19, Padilla 13, Santos 10, Poligrates 8, Mepaña 7, Dacia 4, Magsumbol 3, Basco 2, Enriquez 2.

Smart Gilas just too good

THE Smart-Gilas Pilipinas team displayed a variety of offensive weapons and showed no mercy to the M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu Niños, 83-71, in the first of their two-game exhibition matches at the Cebu Coliseum last night.

The victory evened the head-to-head match-up between the Nationals and the Niños, who hired American Jason Dixon for the exhibition matches, at one game each.

The Niños won their first encounter, 82-76, in February last year and the two will get to settle the score at 5 p.m. still at the Cebu Coliseum.

Gilas’ win also ended the Niños’ string of 26 victories dating back to the Liga Pilipinas regular season.

Coming in full force, Gilas showed the Cebuanos the brand of basketball they will display in the various international competitions, including the Asian Games this November, and they didn’t disappoint.

From the basic half-court execution and outside shooting, to the razzle-dazzle fast break plays, the Gilas brought put the Cebuano fans to the edge of their seats from the start to finish.

Japeth Aguilar provided the highlights of the games with two alley-oop dunks to make sure of another full house game today.

However, the game also had its drama.

With 6:28 left, Gilas coach Rajko Toroman motioned his players to proceed to the dugout after team captain Chris Tiu was called for an offensive foul.

However, he did not carry out the plan and instead pleaded his case to the referees for almost five minutes before deciding to continue with the game.

Following that incident, Aguilar brought the house down with back-to-back alley-hoop dunks that secured the game for the Gilas.

The Niños, however, did not give away the game in a silver platter and even managed to hold on to the lead until the 7:30 mark of the third.

2nd Gilas prospect eyed

MANILA, Philippines - The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas is eyeing another prospect in NBA’s developmental league veteran Brian Butch for naturalization in case talks with NBA journeyman Dwane Jones bogs down.

Smart Gilas manager Frankie Lim yesterday said they’re now in the process of pursuing the 6-11 Jones, who suited up for several teams in both the NBA and the NBDL before ending up with the Austin Toros this year.

Lim disclosed that they had been having a difficult time getting in touch with Jones’ agent since the former St. John standout is still playing with the Toros in the NDL, which is expected to conclude at the end of the month.

“We’re having a hard time getting in touch with him (Jones) and we’re using all avenues to get him because he’s what coach Rajko (Toroman) wants,” said Lim. “Although we will not give up on him (Jones), we know Brian Butch could be a great fit to the team if in case we couldn’t get Jones,” he added.

Lim said Jones, an un-drafted rookie in 2005 who signed up with the Minnesota Timberwolves the same year before he was shipped to the Boston Celtics then moved to the Cleveland Cavaliers and finally to the Charlotte Bobcats two years ago, is expected to fill the Nationals’ need for inside presence.

Butch, a white 6-11 player who plays the No. 3 spot, doesn’t have the same power and athleticism of Jones but is more versatile since he does not only defend and rebound but also a reliable scorer who can hit it from behind the arc.

Smart Gilas feels it has found ‘Mr. Right’

All indications point to Dwayne Jones being a perfect fit for the Smart Gilas Pilipinas national team.

At least that’s how Rajko Toroman sees it after the Gilas mentor revealed that they are close to signing up the 6-foot-11, 251-pound inside operator out of Saint Joseph University, a US NCAA Division I school.

“I like Jones,” said Toroman. “But we have to make a deal. Coach Greg Popovich (of the San Antonio Spurs) was very positive about him. I’m doing my best to get as much information as I can.”

The Serbian coach saw Jones in the NBA D-League during a recent visit in the United States.

Toroman said Smart Gilas team manager Frankie Lim is on the negotiating table with the 26-year-old Jones, who played for the Boston Celtics, Cleveland Cavaliers and Charlotte Bobcats in the NBA.

“Coach was very impressed with Jones,” said Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas executive director Noli Eala. “We’ve been studying his statistics and credentials. Clearly, he’s a worthy candidate.”

Eala added that Jones is described as one of the best big men in the D-League with NBA size and rebounding skills.

“If he is what the scouts have said, then definitely he will be a huge catch for Gilas. We’re praying that all goes well and that finally we’ve found Mr. Right,” said Eala.

He pointed out that the SBP is more careful now on choosing its candidate for naturalization after the first two imports—CJ Giles and Jamal Sampson—failed to meet expectations.

Should talks with Jones fall through, Toroman said former UCLA Bruin Michael Fey or former PBA import Earl Barron will be next in line.

Jones has been tallying 16.8 points, 15.4 rebounds and 1.9 shot blocks per game for the Austin Toros in the NBDL.

Smart Gilas 5 bound for Australia, Las Vegas

It will be a busy two months for the Smart Gilas Pilipinas National Team as they fly to Australia, Serbia and Las Vegas for training.

The Nationals will leave on March 12 for Sydney, Canberra and Perth in Australia and will proceed to Serbia afterwards.

On April 22 to 30, they will be in Nevada where they are expected to be joined by 6-foot-3 Filipino-American Chris Lutz.

Lutz is currently seeing action for the Marshall University in the US NCAA Division I.

Lutz will take one of the last two slots at Gilas, which is hoping to land an Olympic berth in the 2011 FIBA Asia Championship.

Gilas coach Rajko Toroman arrived Tuesday from the United States. He has narrowed his choices between seven-footer Michael Fey, who suited up for US NCAA Division I school UCLA, and 6-11 NBA journeyman Dwayne Jones as potential import for Gilas.

The coaching staff has yet to arrive at a decision at press time

Now on his senior year, Lutz has been tallying 8.6 points and 1.9 rebounds per outing in 27 games. He also averaged almost 26 minutes on the floor.

Apart from these numbers, Toroman is impressed with Lutz’s three-point shooting and solid defense.

Gilas team manager Frankie Lim added that Gilas would become more potent in the backcourt once Lutz joins forces with Chris Tiu, Mark Barroca, JVee Casio, Dylan Ababou and the defense-oriented Marcio Lassiter, another Filipino-foreign find.

Reliability is key

According to SBP executive director Noli Eala, the perfect naturalization candidate for the Smart-Gilas national basketball team is an “import” who can defend the post, rebound and score but most importantly, someone who is reliable and willing to play hard within coach Rajko Toroman’s system.

“With an import, there’s no doubt in my mind we would’ve won the championship in the recent Dubai Invitationals,” said Eala, referring to the tournament where Smart-Gilas finished third despite playing most of the way without Jamal Sampson.

“It’s too bad about Jamal. There was never anything personal between Jamal and me or Rajko. In fact, we had long discussions in trying to work things out. The issue wasn’t about his talent because he certainly is a talented player. The issue was about reliability. He was just always injured. He was down with a headache, a backache, a stomach ache or pain in the knees or the back. We never knew if he was ready to play. In a program like ours, our guys have to be ready to play when the time comes. We only get one shot to advance in a FIBA-style competition. It’s difficult to live with a situation where we couldn’t be sure of Jamal’s condition.”

Eala said Sampson’s gripes about the team were baseless.

“I’d rather not comment on his allegations which are all false because I really don’t want to dignify his claims,” said Eala. “Before Jamal left, we had a good meeting. We settled things. There was an amount we withheld because he left behind unpaid bills, which he has to pay for. He gave his phone to a friend Chris Childress and we’re still waiting for the last bill. Chris was with him in Manila and is now visiting his brother Josh, a former NBA star playing in Greece.”

Eala denied Sampson’s “scoop” that the Smart-Gilas players were disgruntled because of salary issues.

“First of all, Jamal had very little contact with his teammates,” said Eala. “His allegations were based on hearsay or double hearsay and you don’t give credence to that. Our guys practically killed themselves to win in Dubai. As is often mentioned in law, the thing speaks for itself. Our performance in Dubai spoke for itself. The team is fine, the boys are good and they’re practicing well.”

Eala welcomed team manager Frankie Lim’s arrival to the team.

“Frankie’s here to help,” said Eala. “We’ve had a smooth transition. Frankie is in charge of managing the team and his concerns include logistics, recruiting and signing of players, team composition and practices. He is working closely with Rajko in those aspects. As for the SBP, we will continue to be involved in the areas of marketing, media and coordination with basketball federations and FIBA. Smart-Gilas is an SBP team and program and we in SBP will remain a part of its directions and plans.”

Eala said he has briefed Lim on Sampson.

“Everything I know, Frankie knows,” said Eala. “Throughout his stay with us, I tried to keep Jamal sane and happy. I’ve spoken with his agent (Chris Emmen) and we both think it wasn’t right for him to say the things he did about our team. He probably did it out of self-defense because he’s still a guy in the market. It was to protect his image. Although we were exasperated because of his injuries, we never called him a faker. We never questioned his integrity. We never accused him of making up his injuries. The whole point was about reliability and Jamal just wasn’t ready to play whenever we needed him.”

Regarding the decision to retain Toroman’s staff, assistant coach Allan Gregorio said it was a morale booster.

“Credit goes to the dedication and professionalism of our players,” said Gregorio. “Even with coach Rajko in the US, we have maintained the integrity and focus in our practices. It was a good one-week experience to head the team.”

Lim confirmed the other day that Gregorio, Jude Roque and Djalma Arnedo will stay with the team on Toroman’s recommendation. There were prior suggestions to “upgrade” the staff by recruiting Binky Favis, Ed Cordero, Bong Ramos and Derick Pumaren. Lim, however, did not retain the team management committee made up of Butch Antonio, Rico Meneses, Bernie Atienza and Joey Bautista.

Meanwhile, Toroman flew back to Manila on a Philippine Airlines flight last Tuesday after a one-week scouting mission in Los Angeles where he watched several naturalization candidates in game action.

Toroman went to the US to look for a big man to reinforce the Smart-Gilas lineup after C. J. Giles and Sampson failed to make the grade.

At least six players were in Toroman’s radar. But his first choice, 6-11 Courtney Sims of the University of Michigan, may not be available. Golden State coach Don Nelson has reportedly zeroed in on Sims as a possible addition to the Warriors roster.

Toroman’s other picks were 7-0 Michael Fey of UCLA, 6-10 Dwayne Jones of St. Joseph’s and 7-0 Earl Barron of Memphis. Jones, 26, has played for Boston, Cleveland and Charlotte in four NBA seasons while Barron, 28, once suited up for Red Bull in the PBA and saw action for the Miami Heat. Also in Toroman’s watch list were 7-0 Gabriel Hughes of California and 6-10 Kurt Looby of Iowa.

Before Toroman left for Los Angeles, Lim brought two players to Manila for tryouts - 6-10 Darian Townes of Arkansas and 6-10 Jameel Watkins of Georgetown. Neither was particularly impressive.

Smart Gilas vs. Cebu Niños match moved

The two-day exhibition matches between the Smart-Gilas Pilipinas and the M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu Niños is moved to March 5 and 6 still at the Cebu Coliseum.

From the original Feb. 26 and 27 date, the much anticipated game between the country’s representatives to the Asian Games in November, was moved a week later.

Replacement

Toroman and team manager Frankie Lim went in the US in search for a replacement of the problematic Jamal Sampson who was dumped by the SBP heirarchy after a mediocre performance at the Dubai International Basketball tournament late in January.

Toroman has made sure that he can now find a worthy pivot player who can help the Gilas in its campaign in international competition, especially in the country’s bid to earn a ticket to the London Olympics in 2012.

Slaughter

The coming of the Gilas is to give Cebuanos a closer look at the national team, which is composed mostly of collegiate players that include Cebu’s Greg Slaughter who has improved a lot since he decided to leave the University of the Visayas Green Lancers to concentrate on his task in helping the team earn a slot to the London Olympics.

The Niños meanwhile had been boosting its rooster to make it bigger and quicker in its effort to duplicate its 82-76 win over the youthful Gilas in Feb. 28 last year.

SBP is aiming to bring the Gilas to the rest of the country, as part of its effort to bring the team closer to the Filipinos.
