Grapevine, Texas -- Dennis Laurente, the old hand from the Elorde Gym at Sucat Paranaque, tonight beat the veteran Ghanian fighter Ben Tackie to complete the double Pinoy victory in last night’s Top Rank “appetizer” promotions leading to the big event tonight at the Cowboys Stadium featuring Manny Pacquiao and Joshua Clottey.
Laurente scored a unanimous decision with the scores as follows: 78-74, 77-75 and 77-75.
With the win, Laurente is now 34-3-5 while Tacki dropped to 29-12-1.
Laurente was aided in his corner by the 2009 Philippine Trainer of the year, Buboy Fernandez and his manager Johnny Elorde. This writer served as his cut-man.

MEPRANUM LIVES TO PACQUIAO’S EXPECTATION AND HANDS HERNAN MARQUEZ FIRST DEFEAT
Grapevine, Texas -- Right before the fight started at the Gaylord Texan Hotel this evening, Manny Pacquiao’s front man, Michael Koncz came up the ring apron and explicitly told Team Mepranum that if Richie Mepranum does well with his fight against the undefeated Hernan “Tyson” Marquez and beats the highly rated Mexican pug, Manny Pacquiao will hand him a very handsome bonus.
That clearly lit the eyes of the young man from Saranggani and without doubt gave him the needed boast to really go out and give his best.
And as the story goes, Mepranum beat Marquez and will now get more cash than he thought he will with his fight.
Like Steve Kim of Maxboxing stated when told about the bonus offer “There is nothing tlike he almighty dollar to get the best out of anyone.”
Mepranum showed the people in Texas that he is now someone to reckon with in his division.
It will not be too far off to say that his next fight will be for the title. In fact, during the post fight interview, that is what he said is on top of his “wish list”.
Even with less than 20 fights in his record, he has demonstrated some savvy skills that totally negated the power and the style of Marquez. Meprarum landed various nifty counters that at times snapped back the head of the tough Mexican. And, he also showed that he can take as much as he can dish out. He took and swallowed the vaunted upper cuts of Marquez without any evidence of damage at all. After the fight, he barely showed any damage at all. In contrast, Marquez had a slight cut and facial swelling.
Mepranum now gets his much needed rest and will head home with Pacquiao early next week.
