Cobra Energy Drink banked on the hot hands of prolific guard Paul Lee to turn back newcomer AddMix, 81-77, to jumpstart its title bid in the 2010 PBL PG Flex-Erase Placenta Cup last Thursday at the YƱares Sports Arena in Pasig City.
With his team trailing by eight points early in the payoff period, Lee turn the tide of battle in their favor by exploding for 18 of his 25 points as the Ironmen tied opening day winners Excelroof and sister team Cossack Blue.
A Mythical Five member of the UAAP runner up team University of the East, Lee finished with an impressive 8-of-14 shooting while adding five assists on top of two steals in 31 minutes of action.
In the second game, Pharex B Complex leaned on a strong game from unheralded Vic Manuel, Woody Co and San Beda standouts Chico Tirona and JR Tecson to beat Agrinurture (Ani-FCA), 82-62.
Manuel, a former for the PSBA Jaguars in the UCAA and NCRAA, led the Fighting Maroons with 17 points and nine rebounds in just 19 minutes with Co adding 13. Tirona and Tecson chipped in 11 markers each to forge an early four-way tie for the lead.
The Ironmen led for most of the game but the Transformers, led by Allen Maliksi, Jan Colina, TG Guillermo, and Lester Alvarez, methodically took an eight-point lead at the onset of the final period.
AddMix led 64-57 on a triple by lefty big man Raffy Ynion with 7:01 to go before Lee waxed hot, scoring six straight points then Patrick Cabahug fed Pari Llagas for an inside play to retake the lead, 65-64, with 5:37 remaining.
Cobra took a 75-70 lead with 71 ticks left but Maliksi drained his third triple to cut the deficit to two points.
That, however, proved to be AddMix’s last hurrah as Lee iced the game by firing his fourth triple of the afternoon for a 78-73 edge with 44.0 seconds remaining.
