Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire said he is right on schedule as far as his weight is concerned for his title defense against Mexican Gerson Guerrero on February 13 (February 14 in Manila).
"I’m about 5 pounds over,” said Donaire, who has arrived in Las Vegas for Pinoy Power III.
Donaire, who holds the World Boxing Association (WBA) interim super flyweight title, is confident that he won’t have any problems making the 115 pound-limit.
“Next week, bababa na ko. Konti na lang talaga ang ibabawas ko,” he said after working the mitt with coach Jonathan Peñalosa at the Top Tank Gym in Las Vegas.
Donaire is one of 5 Filipinos fighting in Pinoy Power III, which will take place at the Las Vegas Hilton.
Also scheduled to fight on February 13 is Filipino welterweight Mark Jason Melligen.
The 23-year-old Melligen will face undefeated Raymond Gatica of Texas in an eight-rounder fight which will be his comeback from his loss to Michael Rosales last November.
"Sabi nila, last chance ko na kaya gustong gusto ko talagang manalo,” said Melligen.
His coach Tony Martin is confident that the Filipino will get his win on February 13.
"I’m gonna put my money on it that Mark will finish this guy within the distance, that’s how confident we are about this fight,” he said.
Pinoy Power 3, which also features Gerry Peñalosa, Bernabe Concepcion and Ciso Morales, will be telecast live on ABS-CBN on February 14.
Peñalosa will fight Eric Morel, Concepcion will battle Mario Santiago, and Morales will challenge World Boxing Organization (WBO) bantamweight champion Fernando Montiel.
