Donaire camp 100% confident vs Mexican challenger

LAS VEGAS, Nevada – The camp of Filipino boxer Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire is confident that he is 100% prepared for his bout with Mexican fighter Gerson Guererro on February 13 (Feb. 14 in Manila) at the Las Vegas Hilton.

Donaire still needs to shed some 5 pounds before he reaches his goal of 115 pounds, ABS-CBN North America News Bureau correspondent Bev Llorente reported.

“Kundisyon na kundisyon si Nonito ngayon. Sigurado ako mananalo talaga siya. 100% kundisyon siya sa laban kasi ibinuhos niya ang lahat sa training,” said Donaire’s trainer, Jonathan Peñalosa.

Donaire, who holds the World Boxing Assocition (WBA) interim super flyweight title, arrived in Las Vegas early this week. He is the main event in the Pinoy Power III showdown next week. Four other Filipinos are also fighting in the said showdown.

'Strained relationship' with dad

For the first time on camera, the Filipino Flash talked about his strained relationship with his father and former trainer, Nonito Donaire Sr.

“Nagmamano ako palagi pag nakikita ko siya. It depends kung ano ang reaction niya kasi father ko siya, kung bigyan niya ako ng support then masayang-masaya ako sa laban na ito,” he said.

He added that even though his father is not in his camp, he does not let it bother him.

“Pag nandito kami hindi siya sa corner ko at saka main event ako so hindi ko pa alam kung anong reaction niya. Sana bigyan niya ako ng support kasi father ko naman yun. I respect him a lot,” he added.

Nonito Sr. is now training Ciso Morales who is among the boxers for the Pinoy Power 3 showdown.

Melligen training hard too

Meanwhile, Mark Jason Melligen is likewise training hard and determined to defeat his opponent Raymond Gatica of Texas in an 8th Round Welterweight Division.

Melligen, 26, said he is going to avenge his lost to Michael Rosales last November.

His sparring mate is the current WBC Light Welterweight champion, Devon Alexander. Alexander is impressed with Melligen's stamina and power punch.

“He don't stop. He's steady and that's what I like. To be champion you got to be steady. So he's really steady,” Alexander said.
