For helping Ateneo win back-to-back UAAP championships, rookie guard Jai Reyes is expected to grab attention when the 2010 PBL PG Flex-Erase Placenta Cup opens on Tuesday at The Arena in San Juan.
Reyes is just one of several dozens of collegiate neophytes who are out to bring their act to the league, and hopefully provide the kind of entertainment they normally dish out in their respective collegiate teams.
Interestingly, Reyes will have Paul Lee and Pari Llagas of University of the East – his rivals in the UAAP – as teammates for Cobra Energy Drink, thus making their team a top title contender in the season-opening tournament.
Cobra is also hoping and praying that Ateneo will allow veteran Eric Salamat to play for the squad in order to add experience and versatility to its guard rotation.
"I have no problems with Reyes, he's cooperative, patient and very disciplined which are the traits of a good player," said Cobra coach Lawrence Chongson, also the mentor of the UE Warriors.
Reyes is widely-known for his courage under heavy pressure, and of course, for his long bombs which greatly helped the cause of the Eagles during their title series with the Warriors last year.
Aside from Reyes and hopefully Salamat, other newcomers in Cobra's roster are Chris Camus of University of Santo Tomas, Mapua's Mark Sarangay and Greg Aguilar.
Other rookies to watch are Raffy Ynion of University of Perpetual who will play for AddMix, Calvin Abueva and Ronald Pascual of San Sebastian College and Argel Mendoza of Emilio Aguinaldo College who will suit up for Excel Roof.
Agrinurture has 11 rookies in the fold but coach Toto Dojillo said they're all aching to show their stuff.
Also expected to shine this year are NCAA Finals MVP Jimbo Aquino, who had a forgettable stint with Pharex (now Ascof Lagundi), Gio Ciriacruz of Arellano and NCAA MVP John Wilson.
"He was still raw when we took him two years ago, but he has improved tremendously," Ascof Lagundi's team manager Jean Alabanza said of Aquino.
AddMix coach Leo Austria described the 6-foot-3 Ciriacruz as a PBA material, saying: "He can shoot from almost all angles."
