Unhappy to get favorable response to its protest on its loss to Talk 'N Text, San Miguel Beer is now elevating its case to the Philippine Basketball Association board of governors.
This after PBA commissioner Sonny Barrios hinted the possibility of turning down the Beermen’s protest against Talk ‘N Text’s 93-91 win in their out-of-town duel Saturday in Zamboanga City.
“In a nutshell, we have not given due course to the protest and San Miguel is asking the board for a reconsideration/reversal of our decision," Barrios said.
Barrios has actually informed the concerned teams' management of his decision last Tuesday, but bared it only Wednesday through a hastily-called press conference.
Wrong uniform
San Miguel filed a protest after Talk ‘N Text brought a wrong set of uniform, claiming it is a ground for forfeiture.
“I always make it a point to check to our liaison officer if all the things we’re needing are already secured. He told me that TalK ‘N Text is using our assigned dug out because they’re using dark uniform. But they’re really assigned to wear light," Tanquingcen told GMANews.TV.
“I understand the PBA na kailangan kami maglaro for the benefit of the viewing public. But even if we played, it’s moot and academic that it should be forfeited already," he added.
But for Talk ‘N Text coach Chot Reyes, San Miguel’s motive is pretty obvious.
“It’s clear that they’re not doing it for themselves but for their sister teams," said Reyes, referring to Purefoods and Ginebra.
The Beermen became the first team to secure one of the two outright semis berths. But Tanquingcen explained that they still want the win for their own cause, not to benefit their sister teams via a loss for TNT.
“We have a chance to become No.1 kasi at this time, possible kaming mag-No.2 pa rin depende sa outcome ng games ng Alaska," said Tanquingcen.
“We’re not doing it for our sister teams. People should realize na kapag sister teams nga ang involved, mas bakbakan pa and mas personal yung laban dahil everyone of them wants to become good shot sa mga bosses nila."
Not the first time
This is not the first time a team was protested for bringing a wrong set of uniform.
In 1977, Presto, owned by business tycoon John Gokongwei, brought in a wrong set of uniform in its game against Emtex Brazil in the PBA Invitational Cup. Then PBA commissioner, the late Leo Prieto, decided to forfeit the Cisco Oliver-bannered Presto but decided to have the game played as an exhibition game.
“This actually happened more than 30 years ago. There was no protest made because the game was already declared forfeited and was only played for the viewing public," said Atty. Percival Flores, a basketball historian and resident writer of MYPBA forum.
Presto and Emtex played in an exhibition game, which was won by the latter after Oliver knocked down 73 points.
“Of course, hindi na kasama yan sa record books ng PBA because it was a mere exhibition game," added Flores.
