Arum visits Pacquiao training

Bob Arum dropped by the Wild Card Boxing Club in Hollywood on Wednesday (Thursday in Manila) and liked what he saw.

Arum wanted to see how Manny Pacquiao is doing in his first few days of training for the March 13 clash with Joshua Clottey and the Hall of Fame promoter said he was flabbergasted with the Filipino’s work ethic.

“It was like watching him train during the final few days of training for (Miguel) Cotto fight,” said Arum, citing Pacquiao’s fast and furious regimen under Freddie Roach.

“It was unbelievable what Manny goes through,” said Arum, whose promotional outfit is staging the Pacquiao-Clottey scuffle at the Cowboys Stadium in Dallas in partnership with Texas billionaire Jerry Jones.

Arum said that Pacquiao is already juiced up in training that an invitation for him to watch the NBA All-Star Game at the Cowboys Stadium has been politely turned down.

“There was an invitation for him to go and watch it but Manny said it will disrupt his training,” added Arum.

Pacquiao’s preparation goes up a notch as the thrice-a-week sparring sessions kick off with a four-rounder Thursday, according to Roach, who has tapped a rising welterweight from Bakersfield, California, as the first to step up the plate against Pacquiao.

“We’re doing pretty good the past five days,” said Roach.

In the coming weeks, Roach will beef up Pacquiao’s cast of sparring partners with the inclusion of the reliable Raymundo Beltran and young hotshot Jose Benavidez.
