Tougher road ahead for Beermen's outright semis bid

San Miguel coach Siot Tanquincen said the remaining games for his Beermen will be a lot tougher as they try to secure one of the outright semifinals berth in the KFC-Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Philippine Cup tournament.

"It’s getting harder and harder each game. It will always be a struggle, but that’s the price you have to pay to achieve your goal," said Tanquincen, in an interview by GMANews.TV, as he prepares the Beermen against the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters for their 7:30 p.m. encounter Friday night at the Big Dome.

At 10-3, the Beermen are in a good position of joining the Alaska Aces (11-1) of earning the much coveted outright semis berth.

But to do that, San Miguel, which lost its first two games before stringing together nine straight victories, needs to hurdle an erratic RoS team, which is also seeking to move up at least in the middle of the 10-team standings.

That nine-game winning run was the longest recorded in this seasons’ Philippine Cup but was eventually halted by league-leading Alaska last week. San Miguel, however, bounced back big time with an 87-80 win over Purefoods last Sunday.

In the 5 p.m. opener, Burger King, another struggling squad in the tournament, tries to change its fortunes against lowly team Barako Bull.

Whopper team manager and PBA chairman Lito Alvarez couldn’t hide his disappointment over his team’s performance that he is now already thinking of a major revamp for the BK crew.

“I’m making initiative for a change, but it’s up to the team na nakausap ko kung papayag sila," said Alvarez.

At 4-9, Burger King doesn’t want to fall deeper down the team standings.

Games Wednesday (Araneta Coliseum)
5:00 p.m. — Barako Bull vs Burger King
7:30 p.m. — Rain or Shine vs San Miguel
