Smart Gilas players face different kind of pressure

Smart Gilas national team members are used to being under pressure all the time. They always face situations where they have to deliver the big baskets or make key defensive stops.

But on Monday, most of the players had butterflies in their stomachs when placed in front of the camera to invite televiewers to watch the squad’s exploits in their coming Middle East tour on GMA Network’s PinoyTV.

"Ito (speaking in front of the camera) kasi ang weakness ng basketball players," La Salle alum JV Casio, his hands chilling from apparent nervousness. "Pwera lang siyempre si Chris Tiu."

Gilas skipper Tiu, of course, is not new to delivering a spiel on TV, having been hosting Pinoy Records with pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao and Ripley’s Believe It Or Not on GMA, the last two years.

The Kapuso guard ably got the ball rolling for Gilas’ TV plug tapings when the team visited GMA Network, their media partner for their Jan 7-24 games in Doha, Kuwait and Dubai.

Pressured in facing the TV crew, the Gilas mainstays managed to have a good time – a clear display of camaraderie among college boys picked from different schools and leagues for a three-year mission culminating in the Olympic-qualifying FIBA Asia Championship in 2011.

One even got to tease Andy Barroca when it was his turn to pose for a publicity photo. "Wow, Derek Ramsey!"

Tiu said the players really get along well.
