Purefoods beats Ginebra, grab share of 3rd spot

Purefoods Tender Juicy grabbed a share of third spot Sunday night after beating Barangay Ginebra, 89-81, for its third straight win in the KFC-Philippine Basketball Association Philippine Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.

Roger Yap came out with clutch baskets in the fourth period that thwarted the rally of the Kings and tied their victims with 7-4 win-loss slate.

“Roger made important baskets in the fourth but in the end, we persevered to win the game,’ said Giants head coach Ryan Gregorio, who missed the services of Kerby Raymundo due to a contusion in the knee.

Peter June Simon added 14 points while James Yap contributed 13, 11 came in the first half where Purefoods erected a 43-34 lead.

Ginebra mounted a run courtesy of rookie Kevin White and Ronald Tubid and even took a 75-73 lead with 6:05 left in the game.

But Yap and Simon joined forces in a telling 13-4 run capped by Marc Pingris’ 3-point play off Johnny Abarrientos to seal the win for the Giants, 86-79, 1:30 remaining.

Cyrus Baguio led the Kings with 19 points while White, nephew of Talk ‘N Text guard Jimmy Alapag had a career-high 14 points.

Whoppers turn back Painters

Burger King, meanwhile, stormed back from a 13-point deficit and turned back Rain or Shine, 101-99, for its fourth win in 11 games.

Gary David, Mark Yee and Ronjay Buenafe came up with huge plays in the final period to lift the Whoppers to the come-from-behind victory and deny the Elasto Painters their third straight win to drop to 3-8.

“Credit goes to the players. They refused to lose tonight,” said assistant coach Junel Baculi who called the shots after head mentor Yeng Guiao was thrown out in the game after incurring 2 straight technical fouls.

Yee scored a career-high 21 points while David added 17 for Burger King. JR Quinahan contributed 16 points and 9 rebounds while Beau Belga and Carlo Sharma chipped in 12 and 10 markers respectively.

Rain or Shine took advantage of Guiao’s loss as it threatened to break the game wide open after building a 92-79 lead with less than 8 minutes left in the game.

But the Whoppers won’t quit early as Yee, David and Buenafe joined forces in helping their team get back in the game

Yee buried a triple that started Burger King’s 11-0 run capped by David’s lay-up over Jay-R Reyes to slice the lead to just two, 92-90 with 4:34 left in the game.

The Elasto Painters responded with a pair of free throws from Gabe Norwood and Reyes to get some breathing room, 96-90.

But David quickly put his team back with his own triple and Beau Belga added a free throw as they threatened anew at 94-96 with 1:34 remaining.

Rain or Shine sued for a timeout and came out productive after the huddle as Jeff Chan sank a crucial three-pointer for a 99-94 lead. But Burger King was not done yet as Yee answered with a trey and Buenafe picked the pocket of Norwood for the break-away lay-up to tie the score at 99-all with 33.4 seconds left in the contest.

Ryan Arana lost the handle in the next play that paved the way for David’s two free throws, 101-99. Chan had the chance to win it for Rain or Shine but his 3-point attempt was blocked by Buenafe as time expired.

Norwood fired a career-high 25 points while Jay-R Reyes added 21 for the Elasto Painters, who came from a huge 95-93 win over defending champion Talk ‘N Text.
