PBL set January 16

Magnolia Purewater and Cobra Energy Drink boosted their respective rosters for the coming PBL season by taking several high-profile collegiate players during the Rookie Entry Expo held Tuesday at Robinson’s Forum in Mandaluyong.

Already endowed with two talented players in University of the East’s Paul Lee and Parri Llagas who it protected, Cobra also tabbed Ateneo’s Eric Salamat, making the veteran guard as the top home grown pick of the season.

The kick-off tournament is tentatively set on January 16.

Cobra, which is aching to win its first title since joining the league three years ago, also picked Far Eastern University hotshots Paul Sanga and Reil Cervantes, La Salle’s Peejay Barua, San Beda’s Dave Marcelo, Mapua’s Allan Mangahas, and Ateneo’s Jai Reyes.

Magnolia, on the other hand, made Fil-Am Marcio Lassiter as the top pick overall after putting Ateneo’s Ford Arao and Fil-Am Edwin Torres under the protected list.

During the draft, each team – for old-timer – was allowed to protect two of its existing players while the newcomers were likewise allowed to name their two prospective players.

Magnolia, a pioneering member of the league, also took under its wings former Hapee players in Lance Convento, James Sena, and Josh Vanlangdingham.

The team’s other big catch were NCAA MVP John Wilson of Jose Rizal University and San Beda’s Jake Pascual.
