Cardona Rises in TNT Win

ANTIPOLO CITY. – Defending champion Talk ‘N Text drew strength from another Mac Cardona explosion as it smashed a hapless Burger King, 115-104, Friday night to jump into a share of third spot in the team standings with Purefoods in the KFC PBA Philippine Cup at the Ynares Center here.

The conference’s leading scorer, Cardona dropped 32 points on the Whoppers as the Tropang Texters nailed their eighth win against four setbacks to accompany the Giants at third behind Alaska (10-1) and San Miguel Beer (9-3).

“Finally we came up a superb effort the whole game long,” said Talk ‘N Text head coach Chot Reyes.

The Whoppers, who dropped to 4-8, made a last-ditch effort to turn things around in their favor and slowly but surely clawed their way back to just a 10-point deficit going into the final three minutes.

But Cardona was there to quash it with timely hits.

The game ended as early as the third quarter when Cardona and Ren Ren Ritualo –two former La Salle standouts -- conspired in a blistering attack that blew the game out of reach.

Cardona and Ritualo machine-gunned their way to a combined 18-point performance in the third quarter alone to light the run that sent the Whoppers sprawling on the canvas.

The Tropang Texters made their move in the second quarter and transformed a four-point first quarter lead to a little more comfortable 61-48 advantage at halftime.

During that period, Cardona waxed hot with 15 points while Nic Belasco scattered 12 he spiced with three conversions from behind the arc.

BK’s Gary David likewise piled up his numbers and finished the first two quarters with 14 points.

The Whoppers, behind the prolific David, took the initiative early and seized a 24-20 advantage in the first quarter. (JV)
