After powerhouse SMB, Alaska tackles champ TNT

Alaska, the league-leader in the Philippine Basketball Association Philippine Cup, is looking every bit like a championship contender.

Last week, the Aces snapped San Miguel Beer’s longest streak in years (nine games) and on Wednesday, they look to sweep their head-to-head elimination round encounter with their conqueror the previous season, Talk N Text.

The 5 p.m. showdown with old rival Talk 'N Text, which immediately comes after their 122-116 disposal of the Beermen, presents yet another acid test for the Aces (10-1) team aching to relive past glory.

“After San Miguel, here comes Talk N Text," said Cone, whose wards have won 10 of their first 11 games. “These two squads are considered the best in the league. We went into a tough grind against San Miguel and we knew it won’t be easy either against Talk 'N Text."

Asked whether his team has peaked too soon, Cone said: “You cannot pick a perfect moment every time you play good basketball. It’s a matter of starting good and finishing strong."

The Tropang Texters, who had quite a shaky start before getting their bearings late in the first round, are gunning for their ninth win in 14 games.

Meanwhile, Ginebra (8-4) and Sta. Lucia (6-5) clash at 7:30 p.m. with the walking-wounded Gin Kings hoping to draw inspiring games from comebacking veteran Johnny Abarrientos and their remaining healthy players led by Ronald Tubid, Cyrus Baguio and JC Intal.
